New Gmail App For iPhone Is Unusable, Shows Errors Upon Launch

gmail-icon

Well, that was a big disappointment. Google just unveiled its first native application for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch this morning, and the app is a mess. It’s unusable. It doesn’t even launch properly, displaying an error message upon startup.

Within moments of the application becoming available in iTunes, Gmail users took to Twitter, posting complaints, screenshots and generally ranting about the sorry state of what could have been a much better Gmail experience.

One of the app’s most promising features was its support for push notifications. This is something that the iPhone can’t do for Gmail by default. Unfortunately, none of the features Google promised in its blog post are accessible, because, for many users, the app is stillborn. You can’t even log in. (See below screenshots).

Twitter reactions are harsh:

Already an issue with the Gmail iPhone app: the forward and reply buttons only appear at the end of a message not the UI.

Apparently, not everyone thinks the app is bad news, however. And some have been able to load it:

I like the Gmail iPhone app because I can use it for one account, and the mobile web app for another

After installation, here’s what the app looks like (thanks to screenshots from Twitter users across a number of different cellular providers):

The real question is here is how were these problems not caught during testing, either on Google’s part or Apple’s? (Conspiracy theory: Apple did catch the errors, but approved the app anyway).

CNN: Blackberry Outage Impacting Users On Almost Every Planet

planet

There’s no escape. The Blackberry service outage is now impacting users on almost every planet, CNN reports. Tatooine and Coruscant appear to not have been affected yet, but users all over Geonosis, Naboo and Yavin were reportedly hit hard. Our thoughts are with their inhabitants.

With Moneyball In Theaters And October Closing In, Baseball Geeks Get A Mobile App

Logo

For baseball fans, that magical month is almost afoot. October: The month in which we look on, annoyed, as our favorite team heads to Florida to play golf, or stumbles, is injured, and whimpers quietly out of the playoffs. It’s a testy time for most, but still one most of us would never miss.

Another thing baseball fans have likely noticed: Moneyball — a book written about the Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane and his use of sabermetrics and other newfangled ways of keeping tabs on which players are undervalued, etc. — has been made into a film and is being shown in theaters nationwide. With the arrival of Bill James, geeks got a place in the clubhouse.

I haven’t yet seen Moneyball, but it’s on my towering list of things to do this week, to be sure. So, in the spirit of a close wild card race, the encroaching playoffs, and the release of Moneyball, here’s a cool new app for iOS called Baseball Mobile that is, simply put, a fast and easy way to get baseball stats on your iOS devices. Not stats geeks can go mobile. With authority.

The reason I’m excited about this app? It was created with the casual fan and the advanced stats geek in mind, which means that it includes both traditional stats (hits, RBIs, batting average, etc.) as well as sabermetric stats (OPS, FIP, wOPS+) for every player and team going back to the 1870s. It’s also updated daily for 2011 season and will be updated for this year’s playoffs as well.

Baseball Mobile’s data is all stored within the app, too, which means that you can open new pages and run search queries instantly, whether you’re on an airplane or suffering from AT&T’s service.

Sure, there are tons of sites out there on the web that offer a wealth of baseball stats, but they can be hard to find for the casual baseball fan, and many of those sites aren’t optimized for mobile. Plus, who wants to own another ESPN app? It’s nice to be using something made by an independent developer that has no affiliation with the Disney-owned death star of sports media.

The app is a great way for average fans, fantasy buffs, stats geeks, and players themselves to easily swipe through current and historical stats — and it’s a great way to win a bar bet with Tony, who thinks that he knows everything about Carl Yastrzemski’s statistics in the ’67 season.

And, hey, even Manny Acta, the Cleveland Indians’ manager, seems to like the app:

Baseball Mobile on iphone is awesome. What a great app!

And apparently so does Heath Bell.

Bill James’ Daily Matchups is another app out there that has some similar use cases, but Baseball Mobile wins because it will present stats in your favorite format, do so on a team-by-team or player-by-player basis, and the app doesn’t have friction when you choose a new team’s stats because all the info is right there in the app. Users can also switch between regular stats and sabermetric stats by simply swiping the player’s profile without having to return to the main page. Pretty cool.

As to who’s responsible for this app? Mike Gilberg is a first-time iOS developer, so users may notice that the design isn’t exactly perfect. There’s plenty of room left for improvement, but that doesn’t mean that this isn’t app isn’t an awesome primer for baseball fans heading into the playoffs.

It also happens that Gilberg has both served as a ballboy for the New York Metropolitans and worked in the organization’s operations department, building and applying advanced stats — some of which have made it into this very Baseball Mobile app. Thus, what Gilberg may lack in app development experience, he makes up for in familiarity with the geeky world of baseball statistics. And if there’s any sport that is stat-centric, baseball is it.

So check it out and let us know what you think, baseball fans. Oh, and Android is on its way.

Down Goes The Internet… Again. Amazon EC2 Outage Takes Down Foursquare, Instagram, Quora, Reddit, Etc

Screen Shot 2011-08-08 at 7.47.36 PM

Are you trying to use the web right now? Just stop. It’s largely broken.

As indicated by about 20 tips in the last few minutes and pretty much all of Twitter, Amazon’s EC2 service appears to be down. That means services like Reddit, Heroku, Foursquare, Instagram, Fab, Quora, Turntable.fm, Netflix and many, many others are down.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because it just happened this past April. So far, it looks like the outage has been going on for about 30 minutes.

Update: It looks like the outage may be isolated to EAST-1, so not all of EC2. Still, all of the companies above and hundreds of others are clearly affected right now.

Update 2: And after roughly 40 minutes of downtime, the Internet appears to be coming back online. Amazon’s status siteconfirms that it’s being resolved.

Microsoft Responds To Google's Response To Microsoft's Response

reservoir dogs fig 5

If you thought that Microsoft and Google, two massive public companies, would quickly and quietly retire behind the scenes to continue their fight after their very public back-and-forth over the past couple of days, you’d be wrong. Well, maybe they are fighting behind the scenes too, but the pissing match continues in public as well. Good for us!

In the interest of covering both sides of the story (and certainly not because this storyline is full of great fodder, generating massive interest and pageviews), here’s the latest retort from Microsoft. Once again, Microsoft’s head of communications, Frank Shaw, is firing back at Google’s head legal guy, David Drummond, for his most recent update to his blog post from yesterday. And Shaw is doing it again on Twitter.

For those who have no idea what the hell I’m talking about, a refresher:

Shaw’s most interesting Tweet in response reads as follows:

Why? BECAUSE they wanted to buy something that they could use to assert against someone else.

That’s Shaw asserting that Google held out of a Novell patent partnership bid so they could find other patents to assert against others. Google’s stance on the patent matter has always been that they only want them for defensive purposes, so you know this jab must really piss them off.

Hopefully that means another response!

Until then, here are Shaw’s Tweets:

Frank X. Shaw

Hello again David Drummond. This is going to take a few tweets, so here we go. Let’s look at what Google does not dispute in their reply.

Follow @fxshaw@fxshaw

We offered Google the opportunity to bid with us to buy the Novell patents; they said no.

Why? BECAUSE they wanted to buy something that they could use to assert against someone else.

SO partnering with others & reducing patent liability across industry is not something they wanted to help do

And if you’re really interested, more on this topic:
