Mugabe Arrives In Rome Despite EU Travel Ban

ROME — Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has arrived in Rome, sidestepping a European Union travel ban because he is headed for Pope John Paul II's beatification, being held Sunday in Vatican City.

Mugabe's government is accused of rights violations. In 2005, he was heavily criticized for attending the pope's funeral in St. Peter's Square. The EU ban doesn't apply to the Vatican.

Gillmor Gang 4.30.11 (TCTV)

The Gillmor Gang Kevin Marks, Danny Sullivan, JP Rangaswami, John Taschek, and Steve Gillmor christened the new Gang studio with a surprise welcome to Kevin Marks. It turns out he’s joining salesforce.com on Monday, following JP (six months), JT (7 years), and me, who is celebrating my one year anniversary. Kevin has been a forceful champion of open standards at Apple, Technorati, Google, BT (Ribbit), the Gillmor Gang, and now salesforce.com. Before, and once the festivities were out of the way, we got back to Gang business, namely the continued aftermath of the phone location recording crisis.

With free lunch debunked, we tackled the Amazon outage and its impact on the Cloud. You can decide for yourselves, but the consensus is that such challenges will be remembered fondly as a validation of the moment, as with the Gmail outage of several years ago, when the Cloud passed from inflection point to basic services. The velocity of business in the iPad age, where CEOs can see deeply into their companies in realtime, demands a level of interactive services and an iterative feedback loop not possible with the previous generation of software. And that lead to a debate about iPhone video calls and what Danny is looking for in a flying car.

Jinny Ditzler: One Giant Step Toward Greater Self-Confidence: Life Beyond Trying to Be Good Enough

Your problem is your underlying assumption that there's something wrong with you. Of course we all make mistakes, but that's not the point. It's not about being perfect or blameless. The answer is to forget about trying to be good enough.

Shocker! Microsoft commands 79 percent of desktop OS market

Everyone knows that Windows is installed on the vast majority of computers, but it's always interesting to be reminded of what a cash cow the OS has been for Redmond. According to Gartner, Microsoft owned 78.6 percent of the global market for desktop operating systems at the end of 2010 -- up almost 9 percent from 2009. That means, of the $30.4 billion in revenue that various companies generated, $23.8 billion lined Microsoft's coffers. But while Windows remains the kingpin, Mac OS X and -- wait for it -- Red Hat, posted more substantial gains. Apple's market share shot up almost 16 percent to 1.7 percent market share, Red Hat surged 18 percent, while dark horse Oracle leaped from ninth place to fourth, with a 7,683 percent growth in market share -- no small thanks to its 2009 acquisition of Sun Microsystems. Only one question remains, then -- who's the loser?

Volunteers Provide Food, Shelter For Storm Survivors In The South

PRATT CITY, Ala. — Church groups, students and other volunteers worked aggressively Saturday to bring food, water and other necessities to communities ravaged by the second-deadliest day of tornadoes in U.S. history.

Across the South, volunteers have been pitching in as the death toll from Wednesday's storms keeps rising. At least 340 people were killed across seven states, including at least 249 in Alabama, as the storm system spawned tornadoes through several states. It was the largest death toll since March 18, 1925, when 747 people were killed in storms that raged through Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

How the Sun is Making War Easier

The US military is going bonkers over solar energy. It is both comforting and disconcerting to know that the vehicles of war are turning to the Sun to get their power. This graphic by 1bog puts it all into perspective for us. Click to enlarge.

California Ranch House In Brentwood For $3.59 Million

New to the market, this California ranch home can be purchased for the price of $3.59 million. Built in 1950, the three bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom home was once owned by "Closer" Producer Cary Brokaw and his wife, Christine. Located in the architecturally significant Brentwood enclave, Sullivan Canyon, this property is on over thirty-thousand square feet of green lawns. The grounds feature four horse corrals and an equestrian ring, as well as a pool and spa. The structure was built with an indoor, outdoor flow. Vaulted ceilings and french doors maintain the openness of the floor plan.

This home was influenced by Cliff May's ranch-style properties. Cliff May is known as the father of ranch homes and is the most prominent architect in the Sullivan Canyon area. Recently, Bea Arthur's original Cliff May home was listed just around the corner from this property.

App review: Seamless for iOS and Mac (video)

If you're the kind of person who's always listening to music and wouldn't be caught dead headphone-less, pause that song for a quick second and check out Seamless. This lightweight app links your iPhone's Music player to iTunes on your Mac in a pretty clever -- not to mention Cupertino-esque -- fashion. The whole crux of it is the "transition," which simultaneously fades out a song on one end while bringing it to full blast on the other. All it takes to get started is a quick $0.99 download for your i-device and free Mac-centric companion app. Does it work as advertised, or is it really just a gimmick? Head past the break for a quick rundown of just how seamless this utility really is.
