Dozens of tornadoes devastated the South in a massive storm system that has reduced neighborhoods to rubble and killed over 200 people across 6 states, the AP reports. As residents clear the debris and massive search efforts sweep the ruins, officials Thursday said they expect the death toll to rise.
Dave Imy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, said it was the deadliest tornado outbreak since 1974, when 315 were killed. The center received 137 tornado reports around the region into Wednesday night, according to the AP.
Alabama has been the hardest hit by the tornadoes, confirming over 130 deaths.
