Uh Oh … Qwikster Already Has A Lively Twitter Account, But It's Not Owned By Netflix

Screen Shot 2011-09-18 at 11.10.04 PM

Movie delivery service Netflix has just announced that it is rebranding its DVD-by-mail service as Qwikster and that it will keep calling its streaming service Netflix. Shocking news yes, but already the Internet has found one immediate chink in the company’s rebranded armor, other than the fact that, like a multitude of other failed companies, the name ends in “ster” …

Netflix, naively, has neglected to pin down the @Qwikster Twitter account before launch. The account is currently owned by somebody who choses to best represent themselves as Elmo smoking a joint and whose latest Tweets include such pearls of wisdom as, “Bored as shyt wanna blaze but at the same time I don’t ugh fuck it where’s the bowl at spark me up lls” and the poignant “Don’t bother telling me who my ex is now dating ! Cuzz now I feel bad for the bitch that has my sloppy seconds .”

What’s most problematic about this lack of foresight is that the first thing many tech pundits do upon hearing industry news is check a prominent brand’s Twitter account to see if it’s active and on message. @Qwikster, obviously, is not representing Netflix at its finest at this point and time. And yeah it’s a good guess that whoever this guy is could probably make a good chunk of change selling the name to back to Netflix (despite the whole “selling names being against the TOS” thing).

Hmmm … Wonder what he’d spend the money on …

Down Goes The Internet… Again. Amazon EC2 Outage Takes Down Foursquare, Instagram, Quora, Reddit, Etc

Screen Shot 2011-08-08 at 7.47.36 PM

Are you trying to use the web right now? Just stop. It’s largely broken.

As indicated by about 20 tips in the last few minutes and pretty much all of Twitter, Amazon’s EC2 service appears to be down. That means services like Reddit, Heroku, Foursquare, Instagram, Fab, Quora, Turntable.fm, Netflix and many, many others are down.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because it just happened this past April. So far, it looks like the outage has been going on for about 30 minutes.

Update: It looks like the outage may be isolated to EAST-1, so not all of EC2. Still, all of the companies above and hundreds of others are clearly affected right now.

Update 2: And after roughly 40 minutes of downtime, the Internet appears to be coming back online. Amazon’s status siteconfirms that it’s being resolved.

A Look Back On Our Mobile First CrunchUp And 6th Annual Summer Party At August Capital

We had a blast yesterday at our Mobile First Crunchup and 6th Annual Summer Party at August Capital. At our CrunchUp, we had some amazing speakers and special guests. Even Chamillionaire managed to make a certain speaker sweat and started a debate on why Android doesn’t have a decent phone.

Later in the day, the drinks were flowing at August Capital and even Ron Conway was spotted enjoying a margarita or two. Our summer party was a huge success and we want to thank everyone who came.We hope you had as much fun as we did.
