Rdio, the digital music service created by Skype foundersNiklas Zennstrom and JanusFriis, is making a big push to international markets. The startup is launching its service in Brazil later this week, and will expand to Germany and Australia in early 2012. The music streaming service is already available in the U.S. and Canada.
Co-branded as "Oi Rdio," Rdio is partnering with Brazil’s second largest telco, Oi, to bring the service to the company’s base of 17 million subscribers. The service is available for both Oi and non-Oi subscribers and Brazil users can sign up for a free 7 day trial here.
Oi Rdio is similar to its North American counterpart except that it has a slightly different logo, and background color. The service offers on-demand access to over 12 million songs as well as playlists, new releases, artist radio stations and recommendations. Rdio will also offer localized content including music from popular Brazilian artists made available through licensing deals with the major labels and local Brazil distributors and labels such as Som Livre, DeckDisk and OiMusica.
And Rdio users around the world will soon be able to see and follow what new Brazilian subscribers are listening to as Oi Rdio members will be visible to the larger international Rdio community.
Oi Rdio Web costs around R$8.90 ($5 U.S. dollars) per month. Oi Rdio Unlimited (for unlimited web, mobile and offline access) Oir Rdio costs R$14.90 ($8.50 U.S. dollars).
