The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for New York City and the surrounding areas including Westchester and Rockland Counties as Hurricane Irene approaches. The "watch" is in effect until 5am.
A "watch" indicates that while conditions may be ripe for dangerous weather, such weather is not necessarily an immediate threat.
Hurricanes often provide favorable conditions for tornados.
